Our staircase is the first thing we see when we enter the house. It faces North and so, it doesn’t get much light. It was completely bare, and always felt cold and empty.

It’s a simple space – narrow with a straight run. And all it needed was a runner, some lighting, and a few wall accents.

Rug

I like the idea of a stair runner for warmth and comfort under our feet. I also like that it provides safety when stepping down the stairs with socks or barefoot.

I chose a dark brown as the color for the runner because it hides dirt well, especially with a dog in the house. I really like the brown tone-on-tone with the walnut floor boards. This rug is also in our entryway, and so the space from there to the stair feels continuous.

I embellished the stairs with stair rods in a brushed brass finish. They give off traditional style vibes – and I like that a lot. I’ve been wanting to incorporate them into our modern style decor for some time now, and they didn’t disappoint.

Art

On the wall, right before you step up the stairs, I hung art with colors similar to those used in the entryway, automatically pulling together these two areas. The art is framed in a rich dark walnut wood frame, contrasting with the white walls.

The blue in the art is my bridge – bridging the blue in the entryway with blue linen closet doors at the top of the stairs – doors adorned with these vintage-look rich brass door pulls.

Picture Frames

As you make your way up the stairs, you’ll find a mix of frames in different sizes, metallics and blue. Amidst the pictures, you’ll also find drawings from our kids. At the start of every Season, they each draw and display art they create. They love this because it makes them feel special, and part of the decorating. It’s really special to me, too.

Lighting

A matching flush mount and pendant in brass and white glass brighten this space. It is so lively now. I turn on the lights every day right before dusk – – – it’s a vibe.
